The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it will be launch WABA West to begin next summer. “With the recent growth and popularity of women’s basketball, including the WABA, we thought we would accelerate the growth of the WABA by forming a new initiative in the West,” stated ABA CEO Joe Newman. “And we’ve selected a very experienced person in Nick Lorenco to oversee the development.”
Nick Lorenco is a dynamic global citizen and accomplished entrepreneur whose diverse experiences have shaped his unique perspective and business acumen. Originally from Luanda, Angola, Nick pursued his academic foundation in automation engineering in Havana, Cuba. His journey has taken him across continents, including South America, North America and Europe before establishing his base in California.
With a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for business, sports and innovation, Nick has successfully launched and managed companies in various sectors. Today, he combines his business insight with his expertise as a human resources business consultant and proudly owns two professional basketball teams, the New Mexico Bullsnakes (ABA) since 2018 and the Lady Bullsnakes since 2023.
Nick’s commitment to fostering global understanding is evident in his creation and hosting of “Overtop Podcast,” a successful multilingual interview platform that celebrates the triumphs of immigrants, third-culture individuals and expats.
A lifelong advocate for learning and cultural exchange, Nick is fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and English and continues to embrace new cultures through travel and immersion. He currently resides in Albuquerque, NM where he cherishes his role as a father and grandfather.
“I am very pleased and proud that the ABA has given me this opportunity,” added Lorenco. “And I know we can make WABA West as successful as the WABA in the east and give many talented women players on the west coast an opportunity to extend their careers. We already have two teams lined up and many others interested in New Mexico, Arizona, California, Utah, and Texas – and like the ABA, we’ll make it easier to own and operate a WABA West team than any other.
