The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it will be launching a new initiative following the upcoming season – ABA 40+ – a nationwide effort to recognize the skills of players over 40. “There is some excellent basketball being played in gyms across the country by men and women over 40 years old,” stated ABA CEO Joe Newman, “And it is about time we took it to another level with a series of leagues, tournaments, exhibitions and other events highlighting their skills.”

Chosen to lead the initiative is Will Campbell, a former ABA player with the Atlanta Wildcats, Nashville Rhythm and Georgia Gwizzlies who retired from the league following an injury. Will has been coaching and training AAU and will be bringing his playing experience and his business and international experience to ABA 40+.

“I am really excited to be a part of this endeavor,” added Campbell. “There is so much great talent out there over 40 years old and we’ll be able to showcase it on the ABAGALE TV Network too. (www.abagaleunlimited.com). Our goal will be to use the ABA’s 3 on 3 First to Fifty format, to create 4-6 team leagues around the country, to have prize money tournaments, to play games prior to regular season ABA games, and to play charity games to raise money for local community organizations.”

ABA 40+ will be a part of ABA Summer, another major ABA initiative which will be announced shortly. ABA Summer will consist of a variety of events designed to keep the league at “top of mind awareness” and which will be managed by Deanna and Avery Green, owners of the ABA’s SBC Elite Basketball team.
