The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced a new initiative – ABA International – whose goalwill be to establish ABA leagues in countries worldwide. “We have had excellent success in launching ABA leagues in Australia,

Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean,” stated ABA CEO Joe Newman.  “We believe the time is right to develop similar leagues in
Europe, Asia, Central and South America and Africa.  The format developed for our other leagues should work well everywhere.”
“The first step is to find an organizer in each country whose mission will be to establish the league and to find a minimum of four team owners capable of putting together a team,” added Newman. “We have made it very easy to be both an organizer and team owner following the ABA model that has helped make the ABA the largest professional sports league in the US. Champions of each of the ABA International leagues willbe eligible to compete in an ABA World Tournament scheduled for 2023.”
